Essie – Soiree Mauve

Posted by manicuremania on November 21, 2009

ess soiree 1

Very nice. I’ve gotten away from wearing only mauve polishes lately, but I really like this one that I picked up on clearance at Ulta.

Cremes bore me, though, so I added CND Effects Crimson Sparkle. The Effect is very apparent in real life, but I couldn’t seem to get a picture that really captured that very well.

ess soiree 2One coat just didn’t do it for me though, so I added another coat of CND! Now it’s perfection, look:

CND Effects

Posted by manicuremania on November 4, 2009

OK, I had a big long post planned about how CND Effects might be the solution to my recent problems with getting bored with my nailpolish because I have no time to do my nails lately, and how layering most normal glitter topcoats just looks stupid, but then I realized…there, I just said it, so let’s get on with the pictures!

OK no, I can’t do it. I’ve got to ramble for just a bit first.

So yeah, everyone knows by now what the CND Color Effects line is: CND (Creative, the same people who make Solar Oil and Cuticle Eraser) rehauled their whole polish line and came out with 50 (creme) polishes and 15 effects to use for layering. The idea is to create an entire “polish wardrobe” with these 65 polishes. An interesting approach, really, though I’m entirely not interested in the cremes. They’re also quite pricy at $9 for the cremes and $11 for the Effects. Too pricy for me, in fact, but of course that’s retail. I paid half that at Transdesign.

I had assumed that there was a shimmer, a pearl, and a sparkle in each color family, but that’s not at all the case. Apparently there are only 15 Effects, which seems odd to me but also good, because 15? I can and will totally do, considering how much I like the ones I have so far. This is what the Effects are:

Pearl Shimmer Sparkle
gold gold gold
copper emerald crimson
lavender ice blue sapphire
copper jade
scarlet raspberry
violet amethyst

Lots of people have done posts on the CND Effects, and I always find it difficult to see much of a difference, and it’s always all confusing which Effect is which. I now understand why: there really isn’t that much of a difference between most of them, and these are impossible to take accurate pictures of. 🙂 So choosing which Effects to purchase was kind of a crapshoot, but I thought that I would like the sparkles best and the pearls least and bought accordingly.

So, the bottles first:

effects 5

About the bottles. They are kind of awesome. Unusual, attractive shape? YES! Rubber tops? YES! Flattened brush stem-thingy? YES! Nicely rounded, perfect bristles? YES!

Love.

The polishes in the bottles all basically look the same. I had expected that in the bottles you’d be able to see at least a hint of color, but nope!

The Sparkles:

I swatched all of them on a wheel, each Effect on NYC Black, then Wet n Wild Red, then Wet n Wild White. I couldn’t get the Effects to show up very well on my camera, especially over white, but they’re all pretty obvious in person. 😦

Amethyst Sparkle – Seems less dense than the other sparkles, and more subtle.

amethyst sparkle

Jade Sparkle – Seems much more dense than the other sparkles! Much more dense.

jade sparkle

Crimson Sparkle – “Crimson” says red to me, but this is pinkish. Pretty though, so I’m cool with that. Medium density.

crimson sparkle

Gold Pearl – This…is green. Not at all gold. It’s a very frosty pearly finish. I can’t see using this one much, it’s not my kind of finish at all. This gave the most dramatic change of all of the Effects. Brushstrokes galore!

gold pearl

Ice Blue Shimmer – It’s blue, yes, but the end result gives a duochrome effect.

ice blue shimmer

Copper Shimmer – Well, this is copper. Yep, copper. My least favorite.

copper shimmerFinal thoughts, as if I haven’t already said enough:

1) I am getting more of these.

2) The Sparkles may look gritty and rough and glittery, but they’re really not, at all. It doesn’t even really seem to be actual glitter.

3) I don’t actually have another, but I’m extremely happy with my purchases.

4) Oh, I thought of another! One coat. I wouldn’t even consider doing more.

5) And just one more thought. These don’t work so well on lighter colors, or even really on anything that can’t be classified as “dark,” in my opinion. I’d love to see CND next come up with some more dramatic Effects that would actually show up on lighter colors. Also: SILVER.

Orly – Blue Suede

Posted by manicuremania on October 27, 2009

Oh wow. Wow.

orl blue suede

This is TERRIBLE.

I hate this polish so much. The general opinion on this Orly collection (and Blue Suede in particular) seems to be pretty bad, but I just thought the pictures I’ve seen were so pretty anyway that I had to have it, and it’s been on my wishlist for a while now. It looked like such a pretty, dusty blue, and it is I guess. But…this finish is AWFUL. It’s like I painted my nails with acrylic paint or something.

Big smudge on my ring finger cause I splashed my polish remover and didn’t care enough about this manicure to fix it.

Even Seche can’t save it, it darkens it up several shades and now it’s very close to one of those “might as well be black” polishes that I despise.

After a day of wear I tried to fix it up a bit by adding a coat of Sinful Colors Hottie. It’s much better now. Lucky, because I have no time for a real manicure right now!

It was very gritty, I had to use two coats of Seche on top of Hottie, which will effectively glue the glitter to my nails for the rest of my life.

orl blue suede 9I like how Hottie contains more than one size/color of glitter, because that creates much more depth than throwing a normal glitter topcoat on top of polish. It looks like it’s sitting on top of the polish, whereas a glitter topcoat like Hottie is much more interesting. However. There’s not a ton of tonal color to it, is there? I thought this would be a good topcoat for blue polish since it looks so blue in the bottle, much like Call You Later is for greens, but it’s just not really all that blue. Drag! Still pretty though.

Fairy Dust vs Golden Enchantment

Posted by manicuremania on October 3, 2009

So last night I was looking for something to put over top of my Barielle Never-So-Evergreen polish because I hadn’t had time to change it in a few days (gasp!), and I couldn’t decide between China Glaze Fairy Dust and China Glaze Golden Enchantment. And here they are! Ooooooooh, pretty!!

ch fairy dust

It occurred to me that they’re so similar, it might not even make a difference which I choose. I mean, in the bottle, they’re obviously completely different, but they’re also both holo glitter in a clear base – how different can they really be on the nail?

This is one coat of each:

ch gold fairy 4

The glitter in Fairy Dust is somehow much more dense than the glitter in Golden Enchantment. And, really, not much different at all. So I kept on adding coats:

ch gold fairy

ch gold fairy 2This is four coats, and now the difference is very apparent, but (for me) probably not apparent enough to own both polishes.

Sinful Colors green nails – now matte!

Posted by manicuremania on September 28, 2009

Still struggling mightily with my new lightbox. Sigh.

I think the combination of Sinful Colors Show Me The Way and Call You Later is possibly my favorite…ever. I have so many polishes that I’ve never tried that I usually can’t bear to wear a polish for more than a day, but this…oh this is staying on for another day. I did add a coat of Matte About You, though, and…omg, it’s still gorgeous!! The glitter is so dense, and again – the different colors and sizes of glitter just create so much interest!

Tomorrow will also be my first full test of this matte topcoat – I’ve never actually worn it for a full day before, so it will be interesting to see how it holds up.

Sinful Colors – Show Me The Way & Call You Later

Posted by manicuremania on September 27, 2009

I’ve been looking everywhere lately for the Halloween Fantasy Makers glitter, and I finally found it last night at a Walgreen’s! Of course I couldn’t stop at that so I casually strolled by the Sinful Colors display, and I could not believe the selection! The Sinful Colors display at the Walgreen’s I normally go to only ever has like 8 colors on it, no fair!

Anyway, on to today’s NOTD using two of the Sinful Colors polishes that I got last night:

sc show me

Show Me The Way is an awesome bright olive color. It’s got a lot of very subtle shimmer – I really love this polish!

sc show me 2

Call You Later was, like, MADE for layering with Show Me The Way (seriously, was it made for it?).sc call you

Call You Later is a clear base with glitter in three colors (gold and two different greens) and three sizes. The different colors and sizes of glitter creates so much more depth when layering than when just slapping one type of boring glitter on.

sc call you 2

sc call you 3

These are the first pictures taken with the lightbox I made today, and I still don’t think I’ve got my light source right. I might just go back to my old enormous one. I was wanting to try one that diffused light instead of my old way of just pumping bright lamplight directly into the box, which creates reflections, but with the diffused box I can’t seem to get the light bright enough and my pictures are much darker.
